From PCT Dreams to World Cup Cheers: A Journey from Trails to Goals

Change happens fast. One moment, you’re lacing up your boots for a partial hike on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), dreaming of the quiet wilderness from Soda Creek northward. The next, you’re booking flights to Los Angeles, trading trail maps for stadium seats at the World Cup. Life has a way of surprising us, and this year, my plans took a sharp turn from rugged trails to roaring crowds.

From Soda Creek to Stadium Seats

Last season, I spent countless hours on the PCT near Soda Creek, working trail magic. It’s a special kind of joy to clear a path, fix a sign, or help a weary hiker find their way. That stretch of trail is more than just dirt and trees—it’s a place where stories unfold, friendships form, and inspiration strikes. One of those friends was Boujee,

a fellow hiker whose journey you can follow on YouTube here. Being a trail angel for him was a highlight, reminding me how small acts of kindness can fuel big adventures.

But this year, my hiking boots are staying home. Instead, I’ll be cheering in the crowd at the World Cup. It’s a wild shift from the quiet of the forest to the energy of the stadium, but it feels just right. After all, I once cooked for international football teams at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Back then, I never had to buy a ticket—now, I’ll be part of the cheering crowd, soaking in the excitement as a fan.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: Disney and Old Friends

Heading to LA brings back memories of a very different trip. When I was 16, I went to Disneyland with Mrs. Olson, our FHA teacher, and a crew of friends: Cathy Christ, Shana Olson, Jackie Beardon, and Luz Alva. We piled into the back of Mrs. Olson’s truck with a camper attached, driving from Weed to LA. Staying at the Disneyland Hotel felt like a dream. I remember buying a bathing suit at the park, only to wear the bottom right out in the Disneyland pool. Those days were full of laughter and adventure.

Exploring Trails in LA

Even though the World Cup is the main event, I’m hoping to squeeze in some trail time while in LA. The city might seem all concrete and traffic, but it’s surrounded by some fantastic hiking spots:

  • Runyon Canyon: A popular trail with great views of the city and the Hollywood sign.

  • Griffith Park Trails: Offers a variety of routes, including the hike up to Griffith Observatory.

  • Temescal Canyon: A bit more rugged, with ocean views and wildflowers in season.

These trails offer a refreshing contrast to the stadium atmosphere and a chance to reconnect with nature, even in a bustling city.

Family Plans and Hopes

Included in this whirlwind of plans is my mom’s back surgery, scheduled hopefully for March. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that her recovery goes smoothly. If all goes well, she’ll be joining us in LA and experiencing Disneyland for the first time. That will be a special moment—sharing the magic of the park with her and watching her light up with wonder.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

It’s funny how life’s paths twist and turn. From cooking for football teams in Dublin to trail magic in Soda Creek, and now to cheering at the World Cup and revisiting Disneyland memories, each chapter adds something unique. The PCT will always be a part of me, but this year, the roar of the crowd calls louder.

Whether you’re on a trail or in a stadium, the key is to embrace the moment and the unexpected journeys life offers. Here’s to new adventures, old friends, and the stories we carry with us.
