Yesterday I Told the Truth. Today I Decide What to Do With It

What Do You Do When Your Life Feels Unfixable?
There’s a moment after you finish writing something raw — something that finally articulates the myriad of thoughts and emotions you’ve been swallowing for months, perhaps even years — when the next question hits you like a brick:
So how do you fix your life?
This question can feel overwhelming, almost paralyzing, because the notion of "fixing" one's life often implies a complete overhaul, a sweeping transformation that can seem unattainable.
However, the reality is that you don’t have to fix all of it at once. Instead, you focus on fixing one thing — the first thing that makes the rest possible.
For me, that crucial starting point is connection.
It’s important to clarify what I mean by connection. I’m not referring to the need for a full social life, which can feel daunting and exhausting, nor am I suggesting you should strive to cultivate a dozen new friendships overnight, or to completely reinvent who you are from the ground up.
No, what I’m talking about is much simpler yet profoundly impactful:
Just one consistent human anchor every week: someone I see or speak to who isn’t my mom, isn’t a customer, and isn’t someone I’m responsible for. This person could be a friend, a colleague, or even an acquaintance who offers a safe space for genuine interaction.
Having just one person who reminds me that I exist outside the roles of caregiving and responsibility is essential. It’s a reminder that I am not defined solely by my obligations, but rather I am a whole person with my own needs and desires.
Because isolation is the root that’s been choking everything else in my life.
It’s the insidious force that makes solvable problems feel impossible, and heavy days feel unbearably burdensome.

When you’re isolated, even the smallest tasks can become monumental challenges, and the weight of your circumstances can feel crushing.
The smallest antidote to this pervasive isolation is contact.
It can take many forms:
joining a hiking group,
enrolling in a class,
attending a local meet-up,
participating in a creative circle,
or even scheduling a weekly call with someone back home.
Just one hour of being seen, of engaging in meaningful conversation, can shift your perspective. That’s the first stone I lay down in my journey. The one that shifts the ground under my feet, creating a foundation from which I can build.
Once that connection is in place, I can begin to consider the next steps:
Establishing boundaries that protect my time and energy, allowing me to focus on what truly matters.
Seeking help, whether that means talking to a therapist, joining a support group, or simply asking a friend for assistance.
Creating structure in my daily life, which can help to alleviate the chaos that often accompanies feelings of being lost.
Engaging in future planning that stops feeling like insurmountable mountains and instead begins to feel like a series of manageable choices. And it is these choices that are crucial; they are the seeds from which stuck lives begin to move again.
So no, I’m not fixing everything today. I’m choosing one thing. One small, real, doable change this week. It might be as simple as reaching out to that one person, or it might involve setting aside time for myself to reflect and recharge.
And that’s how I start. Each small step is a victory, a building block toward a more connected, intentional life. With each choice, I reclaim a bit more of myself, and I begin to see that while my life may feel unfixable at times, it is, in fact, a journey of gradual restoration and healing.
